As most of you know, I have a love affair with baskets, and through my Cape Town hostess, Binky Newman of Design Afrika, I came across Weaving by the Sea - a Mediterranean Basket Holiday. I fully intended to take a basket weaving course, but when I saw the option to learn Contemporary Netting and Knotting, I couldn’t resist, as it’s so near my current skill set.

The residential courses are held in Vilanova I La Geltru, just south of Barcelona, a stone’s throw from the beach, so of course I could just hop in my car and drive down there. I cannot even begin to describe to you what a wonderful time I had. I met a fantastic bunch of people across a dozen nationalities, professionals and amateurs, all united by a common desire to create and learn. I was in seventh heaven for the 3 days and have already blocked out 2019’s dates. It’s one thing to spend my days here in the workshop creating, having to keep sellability and a sense of economic responsibility in mind, but quite another to remove myself to a neutral space, put the world on hold, and just have fun. Hugely motiviating and energising. And I shall never look at nets in the same way again. They are a work of art!

Please, please check out the Weaving by the Sea website, the photos are beautiful and I’m sure you’ll love them even if you’re not bonkers about baskets like me!

And here are some pics taken during the trip.

PS. And the food and wine at the hotel was fabulous too!
